Cairo, Egypt - Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially announced the country’s development of its first National Action Plan (NAP) on the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security agenda. The announcement followed Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s meeting with Dr. Maya Morsi, President of the National Council for Women (NCW), on 21 May 2019, where they agreed on assigning CCCPA with the responsibility of drafting the plan with NCW, in cooperation with relevant State institutions. 

Coming in the lead up to the 20th anniversary of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325, the decision reaffirms Egypt’s firm belief in the significance of women’s role in advancing peace and security. Egypt has committed itself to increasing its female participation in UN peacekeeping, and has played an important role in implementing UNSCR 1325 in Africa and the Arab world, including by building African and Arab women capacities in peacemaking and other relevant fields of peace and security through the activities of the Cairo Center. 

The decision follows other major steps taken nationally to strengthen the role of women in all fields of society, including the recent constitutional amendment that guarantees 25% of parliamentary seats to women. 

Strategic partners, such as UN Women, have praised Egypt’s decision, recognizing it as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to implementing the constitutional provisions pertaining to women’s leadership and decision-making through the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Egyptian Women 2030, endorsed by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
