19 January 2016
Cairo, Egypt - On 19 January 2016, CCCPA Director, Counselor Ashraf Swelam, welcomed Ambassador Jens-Petter Kjemprud, Norwegian Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan.
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the Cairo Center’s work in enhancing the capabilities of African states in conflict resolution, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, through training and research, and capacity-building programs targeted at Sudan and South Sudan. The two sides exchanged views on the situation in Sudan and South Sudan, and the efforts of the international community to promote a political solution that addresses the underlying causes of the conflict.
Ambassador Kjemprud commended the efforts of the Cairo Center in supporting the Sudanese Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Committee (SDDRC), and the activities aimed at mainstreaming gender given the particular vulnerability of women in conflict. He also welcomed potential cooperation prospects with the Cairo Center in promoting peace and security in Africa, capitalizing on both Norway and the Cairo Center’s long-standing contributions in this area.
