Mombasa, Kenya – The COMESA Secretariat and the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding (CCCPA) held the Noth Africa Experts Validation Workshop for Cluster Studies on the Nexus Between Climate Change, Peace and Security in the COMESA Region.
The workshop is part of COMESA’s first-ever risk assessment on climate, peace and security. It aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the interlinkages and the impact of climate change, peace and security on societies in North Africa, with a specific lens on women, youth, and people in vulnerable situations. The workshop also highlighted the best practices that relevant actors and stakeholders including government agencies, civil society, development agencies, and local authorities can apply in addressing, mitigating and resolving climate change-induced conflicts in the COMESA region.
This regional consultation will feed into the preparation of the COMESA Cluster Studies on the Nexus Between Climate Change, Peace and Security, in line with Article 3 of the COMESA Treaty on the aims and objectives of the Common Market, specifically Article 3(d), “to cooperate in the promotion of peace, security and stability among Member States in order to enhance economic development in the region”.
